WWF has led international efforts to conserve nature and protect the diversity of life on Earth for nearly 40 years. Global warming and climate change pose a serious new threat to the survival of many species and to the well-being of people around the world.

WWF believes in tackling the source of the problem. By 2001 we aim to ensure that industrialised nations set in motion a permanent downward trend in their domestic emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) - the leading global warming gas - as a first step towards substantial reductions in emissions by 2010.

The major source of CO2 is burning coal, oil and gas for energy. WWF wants to accelerate the introduction of technologies which use energy more efficiently with less pollution, and increase the contribution from clean renewable energy sources. Our campaign is working in over 25 countries to raise awareness of the threats of climate change. We want to persuade governments to introduce responsible policies. And we are developing partnerships with innovative companies which recognise that combating climate change will benefit the whole of society.
